Religious Photos Are Another Possibility - We don't often think about taking pictures with a religious theme, or if we do, may not be quite sure how to go about it. An alter scene from your church is one possibility, particularly if decorated for Christmas (probably a subject for next year's card). One person took a photo of a neighbor's Nativity scene to use on a Christmas card. If you do this, it might be nice to ask permission, although it's hard to imagine anyone not being honored by your request. Little ones dressed as angels are a thought, as is a very young member of the family in a manger like setting. A good caption for any of these ideas - "Remember the Reason for the Season."

Send an e-Card - In recent years a number of free greeting cards have appeared on the Internet, commemorating all sorts of occasions, including of course Christmas. Most of these cards have clever animation and sound. They can be inspiring, tasteful, or hilarious. You get to pick the card you think is best suited for the one you're going to e-mail it to. The fun part of it is you get to watch and listen yourself as you try out each candidate, providing yourself with a few minutes of enjoyment in the process. Almost all of these cards have the capability of sending along a brief personal message, if you so choose. Some of these e-cards are so very clever that you really don't have to worry about a special message. The fact that you took the time to pick the card out speaks volumes.

Send A Handmade Greeting - Hand made greeting cards are almost always very thoughtful Christmas card ideas. Perhaps these are best left to those among you who have a bit of artistic talent, or maybe that isn't terribly important after all. If you haven't done it before, the best rule is probably to keep things simple, at least at first. Sometimes when we get to feeling a little clever or creative, we have a tendency to put all sorts of stuff in the card, and tastefulness goes out the window, unless of course that's your intent! Here again, the personal computer can come to the rescue, with the ability to superimpose one image on another, change backgrounds, and in short, come up with something that is pure fantasy, but may look very, very real. If you really would prefer a handmade greeting, perhaps enhanced with a bit of calligraphy, you can still use the computer as a design aide.

A Christmas Story - As a final thought, instead of a 3-page description of what you've been up to the past year, how about finding a nice Christmas story, one not too long, and send that along with your card. You can even edit the story if you wish, or if you have writing talent, make one up. Almost everyone loves a good story, so if you do this once, you'll probably be expected to do it every year thereafter. But, as Christmas card ideas go, that's probably one of the better ones worth trying. Look at stories about the birth of Jesus Christ, the Legend of the Candy Cane, Santa Claus, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Christmas Traditions in England, Denmark, Germany or France, the Legend of the Nutcracker, or Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Fir Tree.

It's not too early to start planning for next years Christmas card ideas.
